Frequently Asked Questions About

First Aid and CPR Training in Alberta

How long is First Aid certification valid in Alberta?

Most Standard First Aid and Emergency First Aid certifications are valid for three years from the date of course completion. Some employers and professional organizations may have additional renewal requirements.

What is the difference between Emergency First Aid and Standard First Aid?

Emergency First Aid is a one-day course covering basic emergency response skills. Standard First Aid is a more comprehensive two-day course that includes additional training for medical emergencies, injuries, and workplace incidents.

What First Aid certification is required by Alberta OHS?

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements vary depending on the workplace, number of workers, location, and level of risk. Employers are responsible for ensuring appropriate First Aid coverage and training is available.

Do I need First Aid certification to work in childcare in Alberta?

Many childcare professionals, daycare workers, educational assistants, coaches, and camp staff are required to hold valid First Aid and CPR certification. Requirements may vary by employer and licensing regulations.

Can I take First Aid training online?

Some components of First Aid training may be completed online through blended learning programs. However, hands-on skills evaluation is typically required to receive certification.

How often should CPR certification be renewed?

Most CPR certifications are valid for three years. Healthcare providers and certain workplaces may require more frequent renewal, particularly for Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications.

What is the difference between CPR C and BLS?

CPR C is designed for the general public and workplace requirements, while Basic Life Support (BLS) is intended for healthcare professionals and includes additional skills used in clinical settings.

How many employees should be trained in First Aid?

The number of trained First Aiders required depends on workplace size, hazards, and Alberta OHS regulations. Employers should ensure adequate First Aid coverage is available during all working hours.

Why is hands-on First Aid training important?

Hands-on practice helps participants build confidence and develop the skills needed to respond effectively during real emergencies. Practical training improves skill retention and prepares individuals to act when every second counts.
